Kay - excellent point. Sometimes an environment can become conducive to breeding these types of actions in people

Tano - also agree with you. The player should have been ejected by the officials or removed by the coach after the first act of aggression.

There are measures and precautions that should have taken place that any institution can do to prevent these types of behaviors. From a PR stand point, after an incident has happened, it is a bit harder to control the spread of information. It is possible to control the spread of information after an incident - take for example this blog - I intentionally never used the soccer players name in this blog.

I'd have to disagree with the statement that UNM couldn't have done some amount of controlling here. For example, take this latest soccer situation. If there had one bad, hard foul well then yeah, the coaching staff can't step in & exert any control there. But when the SAME player keeps doing it again & again in the SAME game? The officials were certainly at fault, but I believe also the coaching staff shares some blame. They should've stepped in & pulled her out, definitely before the hair-pulling happened.

Besides acting honestly I would also say act competently. Athletics is merely the tip of the iceberg. We have have a president who is in his third scandal-plagued administration. We have a board of regents who have been appointed solely on the basest of political considerations by one of the basest of politicians still not indicted. There needs to be a thorough housecleaning but the taxpayers are toothless and the legislature is feckless.

Andrew, I've been thinking the same thing. Hope Smashing will do a review. I've been compiling a best of what's new list as well. Look for that at year end. From what I've been reading 2010 will mark another leap ahead in digital technology in terms of the Web, but also in terms of the convergence of technologies (getting on the Web from everywhere...your phone, computer, tv, car, etc.) We're also going to see another leap ahead in design. As Bob alludes to, the vast majority of people default to what is comfortable and known to them rather than what's on the leading edge. However, if market trends have shown us anything, it is that the early adopters drive and change the market .... look at the iphone (a game changer) 3 years later iphone-want-to-bes are everywhere, look at the rapid change in interfaces like Facebook and Twitter that allow you to customize and get more creative with your sites. There's no doubt in my mind that we're moving in that direction...to Bob's point, it's incumbent that in today's web design world we don't pursue design in the absence of what the audience is looking for, but rather marry the two and bring our audiences along. In fact, others are doing that for us already, if we don't get with the program, we'll look outdated very quickly.

Andrew:
I also wonder about what's hot in web design, given the kinds of input we continue to get from user group research (see 11/03 post on What Students Are Telling You About Your Website Design). The most sophisticated design approach didn't generate as much user interest as a very well done traditional design. I guess it's another example of "know your audience."

I've been thinking about these trends lately and wondering how they have actually been implemented or played out during the year. I wonder if Smashing will do any sort of end-of-year summary.
